Study Abroad

Studying abroad could certainly be one of the most adventurous and best learning experiences that you could have. It allows you to meet new people, get out of your comfort zone, build cross-cultural relationships, and so much more. But you will only be able to have this great experience, if you take a well-thought decision about it.

Here are Some Things You Should Look at, While Choosing a Program for Yourself:

Look at the Course You’ve Already Undertaken:

Your study abroad program would highly depend upon the course you must have undertaken in your home country. If you have already completed your Bachelor’s course in a certain field, you might want to continue studying it further, and get a Master’s degree in the same.

Maybe you are a post graduate, and would like get a second Master’s or further try to get Doctoral degree. You could even be someone just out of high school, who has a wide range of study options to choose from.

It is not necessary that you’d have to choose the same field of study as the one you’ve already studied - you could look at the criteria of various programs, and decide to go for a completely different course than yours.

Look at Your Options in Terms of Locations:

A location is not just about its geography, but also about the opportunities it presents, experiences it offers, and about the people that live there. So the obvious question you ask yourself is, where would you like to live? You would want to thoroughly research, and finalise a place that’d be most likely to offer you the best experience - both personal and educational.

Are you looking to explore a sprawling city, or would you like to get acquainted with the countryside? Do you speak a foreign language that you’d like to refine further? You might be accustomed to a certain lifestyle; and while you won’t get a place that mirrors your way of living, you could still come across a place that bears some resemblance to your lifestyle.

Maybe you like taking long, peaceful walks, and would like a place that doesn’t brag of its traffic; maybe you are inclined towards a certain sport, or feel more connected to certain culture habits.

Does the location offer better work opportunities in your field of study? Do you see your chances of getting a PR increase as you choose to study a certain course at a certain location? Make a very comprehensive study of everything about all your potential locations, and then decide on one.

Look at the Time Period you’d be Spending Abroad:

The course you choose will decide the duration of your stay abroad. You could study overseas for as short a period as just a semester (3 to 5 months), like under a student exchange program of your current college; or you could study an entire program and spend anywhere between 1 to 4 years there. Before you choose your program, think about how much time you are prepared to spend away from home, and at a location abroad.

Also, take into account a rough estimate of the expenditure that’d be amounted during the duration of your stay abroad. The course you choose and the kind of money you’re ready to spend will have a bearing on the time period you’d be spending abroad.

Look at the Legitimacy of the Program:

While choosing your preferred program, look if it is at least accredited or not. Most of the programs would claim to be the ‘best study abroad program’, but obviously all of them can’t be the best. So, meticulously explore every program that you shortlist, and see whether they are dependable and trustworthy or not.

Being accredited is extremely important, because you won’t get a studying abroad scholarship for a non-accredited program, even if you are eligible for one.

These are some of the things that you should definitely consider before choosing your study abroad program.
